Sheet 03Technical designSemester 6At the scale of a building

Working Drawings

My set follows a G+5 housing block from the typical floor, through a section, into a kitchen and down to the edge of its counter.

Brief
Working drawings for a ground-plus-five residential building, with assumed data where needed
Drawings
Typical floor plan, section A–A′, kitchen plans at three heights, kitchen sections, a counter detail, and a toilet drawn service by service
Medium
Digital drafting
Typical floor plan of the residential building: four flats around a central stair and lift core, with bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, balconies and door and window schedules.
01Typical floor plan. Four flats around a shared core.

Plan and section

Start with the typical floor.

The typical plan gives every smaller drawing an address.

Section A–A′ supplies the height the plan leaves out: rooms and ducts in one vertical cut, level marks from the lower floors to the terrace, and the build-up of the roof called out in notes.

Section A–A′ through the building: six floors with level marks, the stair core, a terrace and roof, and a callout of the parapet and waterproofing layers.
02Section A–A′. Floor to terrace, with the roof build-up called out.

One kitchen, three horizontal cuts.

A single plan would crowd drawers, worktops and overhead cupboards onto the same lines. So the kitchen is cut three times, at 600, 1,200 and 1,800 millimetres above the floor: through the drawers and base cabinets, then the fridge, the granite platforms, the stove and the sink, then the cupboards overhead.

Kitchen section A–A′: overhead cabinets, a fridge, a trolley, the gas stove, drawers and crockery drawers, with heights dimensioned.

Kitchen plan cut at 600 mm: crockery drawers and base cabinets on both sides, with hinges and a trolley.

Kitchen plan cut at 1,200 mm: the fridge, granite platforms, the gas stove and the sink.

Kitchen plan cut at 1,800 mm: overhead cabinets in ply and laminate along both walls.

Kitchen sections

The cuts, stacked.

In the kitchen sections the three plans stand one above another, cut through the brick wall and the sunk slab, with each finish named.

Kitchen section B–B′: overhead cabinets, a sliding window, the stove, drawers and crockery drawers, with the brick wall, screeding and sunk slab called out.

Kitchen tiling layout: a grid of ceramic floor tiles with internal wall tiling and the dry balcony beyond.

Detail

At the edge of the counter.

A worktop that was a single line on the plan becomes an assembly: black granite on mortar, a granite fascia fixed with adhesive, kadappa stone, a timber framework, and a plywood shutter finished in laminate.

Detail of the kitchen counter edge: 18 mm black granite, an 18 × 95 mm granite fascia, adhesive, 40 mm mortar filling, 18 mm kadappa, timber framework and an 18 mm plywood shutter with 0.8 mm laminate.
05Detail of the fascia at the counter edge.

The toilet

One small room, drawn five times.

The toilet is 3,000 by 1,350 millimetres and carries more services than any other room in the flat. So each one gets its own sheet: the fittings set out with dimensions, the water coming in, the drainage going out, and the tiles, with the floor falling towards the drain.

Toilet layout: washbasin, WC and shower area in a 3,000 by 1,350 mm room, with section lines A–A′ and B–B′.
Toilet sanitary fitting layout: washbasin, WC, shower and fittings set out with dimensions.
Toilet water inlet layout: supply lines to the fittings, dimensioned.
Toilet drainage layout: soil and waste pipes running to the floor traps.
Toilet tiling layout with floor slopes towards the drain.
